Southern Plains 4-Hers Know How to ....

                                Judge Poultry.

 Poultry team 2009

Six 4-H members from the Southern Plains Unit participated in PASE (Premier Animal Science Event )on the UNL East Campus.  They competed in the Poultry Judging Contest, Livestock Skillathon and Lifestock Judging Contest on June 29th and 30th.  Indviduals placing in the top ten in the Poultry Judging Contest include:

  • 1st Place - Allison Thompson, Burr Oak, KS
  • 4th Place - Morgan Fangmeier, Hebron
  • 7th Place - Ty Rempe, Superior
  • 9th Place - Emet Fanning, Oak

The Team of Morgan Fangmeier, Kasandra Fanning, and Cassandra Mohrmann placed 2nd and will be representing Nebraska at the National Poultry Judging Contest in Louisville, KY this November.

In the Livestock Skillathon, the team of Morgan Fangmeier, Emet Fanning, and Cassandra Mohrmann placed 4th.  The 7th place team was the team of Kasandra Fanning, Ty Rempe, and Allison Thompson.  This contest test the 4-Hers' skill as team, in livestock management.

The members also competed in the State 4-H Livestock Juding contest but did not place in the top ten.

Extension Help for Harvest Challenges

Corn Ear Rot, Grain Mold Diseases and Grain Drying. The cooler summer temperatures and late season precipitation are exacerbating harvest challenges this year. Diseases in the corn still standing in the fields such as corn ear rot cause even more problems in stored grain and should be handled differently at harvest to prevent further losses. The pathogens that cause these diseases can continue to grow in the bin and may have dramatic impacts on quality, including the possibility of mycotoxin accumulation. H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu)
